The Association of Refugee Women in Uganda (AORW U) extends heartfelt appreciation to Brigitte and Friends from Switzerland and Luisa and Family from Germany for their generous support of the Christmas Solidarity Initiative 2025. Your compassion and solidarity enabled us to respond to acute food insecurity and basic needs among vulnerable refugee women led households in Kampala during the festive season.
Through your contributions, 555 direct beneficiaries from 55 households across all five divisions of Kampala received food assistance, clothing, and footwear. This support not only met urgent needs but also restored dignity, hope, and joy to families facing persistent economic hardship and high living costs.
Your kindness reminds our communities that they are not alone, and that solidarity transcends borders. AORW U is deeply grateful for your partnership in uplifting refugee women and their families during a time of great need.

Christmass Solidarity Party for Refugees in Uganda

Investing in Resilience is a transformative initiative dedicated to empowering refugee women to rebuild their lives with courage. Our goal is to provide refugee women with small loans and financial tools to launch and grow their own small businesses. By supporting this initiative, we will help create sustainable income opportunities, reduce dependency on aid, and foster long-term economic resilience. Each contribution directly enables women to invest in their futures, support their families, and become agents of change in their communities.

Investing in Resilience—Micro Enterprise Finance for Refugee Women in Uganda

This week, our women beneficiaries took big steps toward sustainable livelihoods and food security:
✨ Goat Husbandry Training – Learning goat care, breeding, and disease prevention for long term sustainability.
🌳 Fodder Tree Distribution – Calliandra & Sesbania seedlings provided to ensure goat feed and restore the environment.
🥕 Kitchen Gardening Education – Practical training to establish household gardens, diversify diets, and cut food costs.
🌿 Vegetable Seedlings Provided – Dodo, cabbages, sukumawiki, green pepper, celery, parsley & spinach distributed for immediate food production.
🍲 Harvest from Learning Site – Women harvested vegetables, proving the power of skills transfer and building confidence to adopt new practices.

Empowering refugee women and host communities, One Skill at a Time!

In Uganda’s refugee settlements, women face daily struggles to feed their families and rebuild their lives. But with a simple gift of a goat their story begins to change. The Association of Refugee Women Uganda (AORW U) has been distributing goats to refugee women, giving them more than livestock giving them opportunity, dignity, and hope.
These goats provide income, and a pathway to resilience. Women are learning goat husbandry, planting fodder trees like Calliandra and Sesbania, and harvesting vegetables from kitchen gardens. Families are eating better, saving money, and even earning from sales.
The impact is real. Household incomes are rising. Children are healthier. Communities are stronger. Refugee women are becoming leaders and providers.

Empowering Refugee Women in Uganda through Goat farming

Refugees and host communities alike are grappling with the compounded effects of climate change, land scarcity, and limited access to agricultural resources. Erratic rainfall, prolonged dry spells, and rising temperatures have significantly reduced soil fertility and water availability, causing crop yields to drop by up to 30% in some regions (World Food Program). In Nakivale, high population density and dependence on natural resources have accelerated environmental degradation through overgrazing and deforestation, further undermining agricultural productivity.
Most refugee farmers rely on rain-fed agriculture and cultivate staple crops such as beans and maize. However, they lack access to drought-resistant seeds, irrigation systems, and post-harvest technologies. Without targeted interventions, climate change will continue to deepen agricultural vulnerability and poverty. Our work aims to promote inclusive, climate-smart agricultural livelihoods and foster sustainable economic opportunities for both refugee and host populations.

Empowering refugee women in Uganda to adapt to climate change impacts

In the heart of southwestern Uganda, the Rubondo sub-base camp in Nakivale Refugee Settlement is facing a severe water crisis one that threatens the health and dignity of over 150,000 refugees. Most of these refugees come from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia, and Rwanda. Every day, they wait in line for hours just to collect water. For many, the only option is to pay between 1,000 to 2,000 Ugandan Shillings per jerry can. For others, the only source is contaminated swamps and dams, increasing the risk of deadly diseases like cholera. The crisis is fueled by a growing population fleeing conflict and violence, overwhelming the already fragile water infrastructure. With limited funding and no effective water management systems, the situation continues to deteriorate. Humanitarian organizations are stepping in, working to improve access. But the need far outweighs the support. Vulnerable groups women, children, and people with disabilities are hit hardest. Long queues often lead to conflict, and the lack of clean water and sanitation fuels outbreaks of disease.
This is more than a crisis. It’s a call to action. The people of Rubondo need clean water not tomorrow, but today.
