Gender equality
Refugee women in Uganda often face significant challenges, including Gender Based Violence in various forms such as rape, female genital mutilation, physical, psychological, and emotional abuse, defilement, bride kidnapping, and sexual harassment. These challenges are exacerbated by adverse conditions such as lack of basic needs, unequal power relations, breakdown of social institutions, exposure to group violence, and low capacity of protection agencies, resulting into increased vulnerability and hardship. In conflict and post-conflict situations, girls and young women are less likely to access basic rights and education is often overlooked in favor of male children, leading to increased household responsibilities for girls.
In refugee settlements, women and girls face additional obstacles hindering their empowerment. Women are often overburdened with traditional responsibilities, leaving them little time to engage in decision-making processes. Girls are frequently forced to drop out of school to assist with household chores, and young women face challenges related to traditional gender roles, harmful practices like early or forced marriage, and unequal access to services and resources. Sexual Gender Based Violence and Sexual Reproductive Health factors, including rape and forced impregnation, are also prevalent.
The Association for Refugee Women – Uganda works to support refugee women and host communities in ending violence against women and girls. This is being achieved by:
CHANGING KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE, AND PRACTICES:
Targeting men and boys, local authorities, traditional leaders, religious leaders, and women and girls to alter perceptions and behaviors related to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and SRHR
ENHANCING GBV PREVENTION AND RESPONSE SERVICES:
Increasing awareness and accessibility to holistic GBV prevention and response services within the communities. Strengthen the capacity of GBV service providers in case management including MHPSS. Furthermore, we will distributes dignity kits to displaced women and girls, tailored explicitly to local needs, containing hygiene and sanitary items. These kits are essential for maintaining feminine hygiene, dignity, and respect in their daily lives, particularly in the face of displacement. They contribute to improving cleanliness and support women and girls in maintaining their dignity during humanitarian crises, crucial for coping in stressful situations and providing care and protection to their children.
REDUCING WOMEN’S RISK THROUGH EMPOWERMENT:
Providing vocational training, economic empowerment, and livelihood opportunities to survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence enabling them to achieve self-reliance and occupy influential positions in the community.
STRENGTHENING REFUGEE WOMEN-LED GROUPS:
Building the capacity of refugee women-led groups, conduct safety audits and risk and vulnerability mapping, elevating their visibility, and supporting their advocacy efforts for the complete elimination of oppression, fostering self-confidence to combat discrimination effectively.
