Education

  • Refugee women and girls in Uganda encounter multifaceted barriers to accessing education, stemming from displacement and a complex interplay of social and economic factors. The foremost challenge is the limited access to education, exacerbated by insufficient schools and educational resources in refugee camps. Many women and girls among the refugee population lack formal education opportunities, and those enrolled often contend with inadequate resources in their learning environments. Cultural norms and practices further discourage girls from pursuing education, as early marriage and childbirth take precedence.

Language barriers present a significant hurdle, as refugee women and girls may not be proficient in the instructional language used in schools. Economic constraints, marked by poverty and restricted resource access, impede their educational prospects. Safety concerns loom large, with the looming threats of sexual and gender-based violence, harassment, and abduction, creating a hostile environment for attending school.

In response to these challenges, the Association of Refugee Women and Girls in Uganda (AORW-U) is implementing a multifaceted approach:

AORW-U EDUCATION PROGRAM
AORW-U EDUCATION PROGRAM
  • Providing scholarly materials to facilitate the retention of refugee students in schools.
  • Offering scholarships to cover requisite school fees, removing financial barriers to education.
  • Organizing classes focused on literacy, numeracy, and broader life skills, empowering students to become leaders, change agents, and active global citizens.
  • Implementing vocational and skills training programs to equip women and girls with capabilities that enhance employability and enable them to support their families.
  • Integrating comprehensive sexuality education into the curriculum, ensuring that girls acquire knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about their bodies, relationships, and sexuality, free from coercion, violence, and discrimination.
  • Promoting girls’ active participation in ICT and digital technology education, fostering their engagement in these critical fields.
