Vocational Skills 4 Her
Young refugee women in Uganda confront a dual challenge, grappling with limited access to both education and employment opportunities. This vulnerable demographic encounters formidable barriers hindering their ability to access crucial resources for building sustainable futures. A particularly critical deficiency lies in the realm of tailoring and sewing opportunities, where these women lack avenues to acquire valuable skills and establish income streams that could significantly impact their economic empowerment and contribute to the overall improvement of their lives and the well-being of their families.
AORW-U will establish a tailoring center in Kampala, Uganda, aimed at training 500 refugee women in sewing and empowering girls in producing reusable sanitary towels. This center will offer a secure and inclusive space for participants to access high-quality training, equipping them with skills for sustainable employment. The program focuses on vocational skills development, including life skills, entrepreneurship, trauma healing, and knowledge of rights for self-advocacy. To kickstart income-generating activities, participants will receive start-up kits for establishing tailoring shops, particularly for the production of school uniforms.
By offering skills training and start-up kits to 500 women and girls, they will engage in sustainable economic activities, elevating their living standards. This initiative aims to empower them to overcome stress and trauma, lifting themselves out of poverty and enabling them to provide for their families. The result will be a resilient community approaching life with confidence and dignity, fostering harmonious relationships within the settlement and with the host community. Ultimately, their newfound skills contribute to the Ugandan economy, creating a positive impact on the community and potentially benefiting their home country upon their eventual return.
