Empowering refugee women in Uganda to adapt to climate change impacts

Refugees and host communities alike are grappling with the compounded effects of climate change, land scarcity, and limited access to agricultural resources. Erratic rainfall, prolonged dry spells, and rising temperatures …have significantly reduced soil fertility and water availability, causing crop yields to drop by up to 30% in some regions (World Food Program). In Nakivale, high population density and dependence on natural resources have accelerated environmental degradation through overgrazing and deforestation, further undermining agricultural productivity.
Most refugee farmers rely on rain-fed agriculture and cultivate staple crops such as beans and maize. However, they lack access to drought-resistant seeds, irrigation systems, and post-harvest technologies. Without targeted interventions, climate change will continue to deepen agricultural vulnerability and poverty.
